THE ELEMENTS

The oceans of the world all share something in common, thay are monuments to the erosive power of nature. Whether viewing the oil platforms in the North Sea in a force 11 gale or threading the rapids of Skookumchuk Narrows, I am always in awe. The weather that shapes our environment here on Vancouver Island is no different, one bad storm or tidal surge can drastically alter the shoreline and beyond. Then there is the omnipresent threat of earthquakes. The place we live is forever moving, forever altering. Photographers are like the storm chasers to some degree. To get the very best images you have to be alert and well informed. You need good maps, good clothing and a lot of plastic bags and tarps. The car can become your home, at least temporarily. Determination and luck will bring results. On one shoot I destroyed a $20,000 CAD camera as I was thrown agains an oil supply ship wheelhouse railing. A deluge of salt water ruined my day in a split second, I never saw it coming but I did get the shot..
