ISLAND EDGES
Line and form are what draw our eye and make something noticeable. The placement and metamorphosis from one component detail to another are the quintessential elements of a great picture. Boats, rocks and water in real life are a recipe for conflict but the sum of the parts when arranged properly are a revelation in a photograph. I am constantly engaged with my camera consumed in the dance of colour shape and space as I walk the shoreline of Sidney. I have lived in many places but rarely have I lived far from the sea. Indeed I have lived on four islands, Orkney, Cape Breton, Newfoundland and Vancouver Island. They all have the same common elements that make them distinct from the mainland. They are owned by the weather and the limits of passenger ro-ro car ferries, Cape Breton being the odd one out but causeways have their limits too. These physical transport limitations to normal life are always in the back of the mind. It is what makes one an islander.
