INHABITANTS

One day returning from a rather mundane trip to Victoria I was passing along Lochside Drive. The roundabout was relatively new and cars were being forever cautious at the intersection. From there to home is only a matter of minutes and to be honest on this day I was not really paying attention to what was outside the car. Oh my god…

Just before Tulista Park I saw a small crowd of people and cars were stopping abruptly. What is going on? Then I saw it, there was an entire pod of about a dozen killer whales “playing” in the shallows along the beach, right there, right then. My cameras where at the house and this was a take now or forget it moment. All I had was my Galaxy Note 2 cell phone. I armed the “camera” and just began shooting. I don’t remember where I parked the car or how I did it. I was suddenly enthrawled with this unique scene as was everyone else. This lasted perhaps ten minutes and then the whales moved off the shore and mustered in a group or groups before heading northwards along the channel. Larger whales in the front, the juveniles following behind. Unfortunately the cell phone cameras of the day could capture 700k images, something good for a small web image like this or a thumbnail perhaps. There is something to be said for the progress of technology. The picture of this bald eagle in the North End of Sidney was rather different. I parked my equipment for a couple of days in order to glean the images I wanted. No cell phone this time, rather I was prepared. It just needed patience and time.
